What is ujt and its working

The Unijunction Transistor or UJT for short, is another solid state three terminal device that can be used in gate pulse, timing circuits and trigger generator applications to switch and control either thyristors and triac's for AC power control type applications.

How does UJT transistor work?

The Unijunction Transistor (UJT) will act as voltage breakdown device, when the input applied between emitter and base 1 reduces below breakdown value i.e., RB1 increases to a higher value. This shows that RB1 depends on the emitter current and it is variable.

What is UJT example?

Commonly available unijunction transistors include the 2N1671, 2N2646, 2N2647, etc, with the 2N2646 being the most popular UJT for use in pulse and sawtooth generators and time delay circuits.

Why UJT is used?

Uni Junction Transistor (UJT): The uni-junction transistor is a solid-state three-terminal device that can be used in gate pulse, timing circuits, and trigger generator applications to switch and control both thyristors and triacs for AC power control type applications.

What are the types of UJT?

Types of UJT's The 2N2646 is the most commonly used version of the UJT. The complementary unijunction transistor (CUJT) consist of a bar of P type semiconductor material into which N type material has been diffused somewhere along its length, defining the device parameter 'η'. The 2N6114 is one version of the CUJT.

Why UJT is called unipolar?

The conduction in UJT is based on the movement of majority charge carriers only. Thus, it is a unipolar device. The conduction in a BJT is based on the movement of both majority and minority charge carriers.

What is the principle of UJT oscillator?

The capacitor usually starts charging and continues to charge until the maximum voltage VBB. But in this circuit, when the voltage across capacitor reaches a value, which enables the UJT to turn ON (the peak voltage) then the capacitor stops to charge and starts discharging through UJT.

Why UJT is used in SCR?

The UJT is used to more accurately trigger the SCR. The trigger voltage is equal to the capacitor voltage, since the capacitor is connected between the PUT anode and ground. When the capacitor charges to the trigger voltage, the PUT turns on, discharging the capacitor through R4, turning on the SCR.

What is the circuit symbol of UJT?

Symbol of Unijunction Transistor: The symbol of UJT looks similar to the symbol of JFET except the bent arrow. The three terminals of UJT are emitter, Base1 and Base2.

Where is UJT used?

The UJT is not used as a linear amplifier. It is used in free-running oscillators, synchronized or triggered oscillators, and pulse generation circuits at low to moderate frequencies (hundreds of kilohertz). It is widely used in the triggering circuits for silicon controlled rectifiers.

What is difference between UJT and BJT?

UJT is only one junction is present in BJT, while in BJT consist of two junctions. It is two junction transistors. UJT is also known as double-base diode as contains two bases while in BJT contain three-terminal namely emitter, base, and collector.

Why UJT is called UJT?

Since the device has three terminals and one pn-junction, for this region this is called as a Unijunction Transistor (UJT). The device has only pn-junction so it forms a diode.

What is the measure of UJT?

UJT parameters The typical range of RBBO is from 4KΩ to 10KΩ. Intrinsic standoff ratio (η) : It is the ratio of RB1 to the sum of RB1 and RB2. It can be expressed as η = RB1/(RB1+RB2) or η = RB1/RBBO. The typical range of intrinsic standoff ratio is from 0.4 to 0.8.

What are the three terminals of UJT?

The UJT has three terminals designated (Base1) B1, (Base2) B2 and (Emitter) E. The base material for a UJT is a lightly doped N-Type Silicon bar with ohmic contacts given at the lengthwise ends.

Is UJT a diode?

Uni Junction Transistor (UJT) is also known as double base diode . It acts as a switching transistor instead of amplifying the signals. In UJT the PN junction is formed by lightly doped N-type silicon with heavily doped P-type material on one side.

Why does UJT have 2 bases?

UJT consists of a lightly doped N-type silicon bar in which a P-type material is diffused thus producing PN junction. Due to the existence of a single PN junction, it is termed as a Unijunction device. It consists of two ohmic contacts at the end of the bar which is labelled as base 1 (B1) and base 2 (B2).

Is UJT used as an oscillator?

The UJT relaxation oscillator applications are These oscillators produce low-frequency signals. UJT Relaxation Oscillator is used in function generator to produce sweep signals, Electronic Beepers, SMPS, blinking lights, Voltage-controlled oscillators, inverters, etc..

What is a UJT also known as?

Uni Junction Transistor (UJT): The uni-junction transistor is a solid-state three-terminal device that can be used in gate pulse, timing circuits, and trigger generator applications to switch and control both thyristors and triacs for AC power control type applications.

What is the main applications of FET?

FETs are widely used as input amplifiers in oscilloscopes, electronic voltmeters and other measuring and testing equipment because of their high input impedance. As a FET chip occupies very small space as compared to BJT chip, FETs are widely used in ICs.
